Thank you, Charlie Hebdo, for your stand for freedom of speech, for your courage, for your persistence, for your willingness to sacrifice.
When the media outlets shrank back because of fear and political correctness, you did not.
Your stand brought a breath of hope for freedom for the oppressed and the deprived from freedom of speech in the Middle East and the World — for over 1.3 billion Muslims who do not have freedom of speech, like Raif Badawi in Saudi Arabia and Asia Bibi in Pakistan.
You stood in solidarity with victims of freedom of speech, with Theo Van Gogh in Holland, Mohammed Qatta, Syrian teenager, Governor of Punjab Salman Taseer and many others who were murdered for blasphemy. …

Example message social media : Dear @[entername], What is Indonesia doing for the 70-year old man — Apollinaris Darmawan- who mobs dragged from his home and police arrested on alleged blasphemy charges? Please #releaseapollinaris
Your Excellency,
I am deeply concerned about the Court sentencing Apollinaris Darmawan to five years in prison. Given Apollinaris 70-years of age, this sentence is virtually a death sentence. …
At last years OSCE Human Dimension Implementation Meeting — when we could meet in person, Set My People Free’s founder shared this intervention with the OSCE states on the importance of freedom of speech and access to information.
You can download the intervention here: https://www.osce.org/files/f/documents/1/0/432527_0.pdf
Thank you for prioritising freedom of expression by giving the first three days of the OSCE HDIM to this issue, as it is basic for democracy to impart information and to receive information.
Freedom for the media and of the internet is crucial for freedom of expression. …
En tweet ska ha sagt, “Islam is not a religion but a heretical teaching that silences and uncivilizes its people.”
10 December 2020 |Stockholm, SWEDEN.
To mark Human Rights Day, Set My People Free held an exhibition honouring the victims and survivors of Islamic apostasy and blasphemy laws.
The blue December morning light illuminates the tiles at Sergels Torg, black and white. A trailer rolls in with white boards carrying the stories of men, women and children whose lives were tragically taken away by the shots of Islamists or a damning court ruling sentencing them to death or a lengthy prison sentence.
Over 10 countries have the death penalty for apostasy in the books and in 14 countries it is illegal. In addition, countries which do not have apostasy or blasphemy laws can have them applied by family members or society. …
The bill calls for the global repeal of blasphemy, heresy and apostasy laws as these laws are used to stifle freedom of religion or belief and freedom of expression.
Over 10 countries have the death penalty for apostasy or blasphemy and according to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), more than one-third of countries maintain the use of blasphemy laws, with penalties including fines, imprisonment, forced labor and the death penalty. The Resolution also calls for the immediate release of religious prisoners of conscience worldwide.
The passing of this law is a huge win for the over 1,3 billion muslims who live in countries which have Islamic apostasy and blasphemy laws making it illegal to leave Islam or question any of its tenets. This was the case for Raif Badawi, Hamza Kashgari, Soheil Arabi, Mary Mohammedi, Mubarak Bala, among others. …

Last week the hearing against 70 year-old Catholic ex-Muslim Apollinaris Darmawan was held.
The prosecution called for 6 years in prison and and a fine of IDR 800 million for 70 year-old Apollinaris Darmawan for alleged #blasphemy.
In August this year, a mob stormed Apollinaris home, dragging him outside and stripping him of his clothes for allegedly insulting Islam on social media. The tweet said, “Islam is not a religion but a heretical teaching that silences and uncivilizes its people.” Apollinaris himself is a former Muslim, now Catholic, and has used his social media to debate religion.
The defence hopes to lower the sentence, the second hearing was scheduled for the 1 December 2020. …
27 November 2020, Al-Monitor recently reported on the case of several Egyptian Christians being accused of insulting Islam, the police also detained a Muslim man for mocking the hosts of the Cairo-based “Holy Quran Radio Station,” and a Muslim woman for a facebook post.
On Nov. 11, the Supreme State Security Prosecution investigated two Christians — Ayman Rida Hanna and Mounir Masaad Hanna — and referred them to criminal court on the grounds of mocking Islam and insulting religion.
…
In another incident, a Christian teacher and a Muslim girl were arrested Nov. 11 in the coastal Ismailia governorate over comments on Facebook posts that security forces described as “insult and contempt of religion.” …
PRESS RELEASE 27 November 2020
Australia as part of the International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance will be prioritising the repeal of the death penalty for #apostasy and #blasphemy laws at the UN.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Women Marise Payne stated to the Ministerial Forum of the International Religious Freedom or Belief Alliance last week:
“When it comes to the use of the death penalty for apostasy or blasphemy, we have been strong in our advocacy, including in the Asia Bibi case in Pakistan.
So, we look forward to joining with Alliance members to multiply our efforts as we work against the death penalty in similar instances.” …
